ESLR 340

Advanced Reading Skills Through Literature

This course is designed to improve vocabulary and reading skills for advanced students. Readings include selected essays, poetry, plays, short stories, and novels. Students will read and discuss (in person or online) literature from a variety of cultural perspectives including contributions and social experiences of underrepresented ethnic or racial groups. This course emphasizes critical thinking skills and reading strategies needed for academic performance: (1) vocabulary development, (2) analysis and comprehension skills, (3) flexibility of reading rate. The course also emphasizes the comparison and contrast of universal and metaphorical themes. (Competency: Reading)
