CHE 144

General, Organic & Biochemistry II

General, Organic, and Biochemistry II is a continuation of CHE 134 - General, Organic, & Biochemistry I. This course is taught at an introductory level with a theme of the interrelatedness of chemistry and health. The chemical structures and properties of the four major classes of biomolecules (lipids, carbohydrates, proteins, and nucleic acids) will be covered. The structure/property relationship of biomolecules, along with understanding their function in living systems is explored. Interactions of the biomolecules with each other and with drug molecules will also be presented. Metabolism, nutrition, protein biosynthesis and genetic diseases will be covered as time permits. This course is not acceptable as credit toward a chemistry or biology degree. There are three hours of lecture, and one three-hour laboratory each week. Spring
