MUSC 302

Music and Global Society

An exploration of the ways in which music functions in society around the globe. Using case studies from the West and non-West and drawing from classical, folk, and popular traditions, we will examine a wide variety of social functions for music, noting both the cross-cultural similarities (e.g., the use of music for ritual, dance, and story telling) as well as differences (e.g., a diversity of aesthetics, sounds and styles, genres, contexts, and interpretations of musical activity)
