American Literature II

This course surveys representative works in American literature from approximately 1865 to the present. Readings and discussion will highlight the multicultural nature of American literature and society. Students will read a variety of stories, novels, plays, and poetry by such authors as Mark Twain, Henry James, Kate Chopin, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Langston Hughes, Zora Neal Hurston, Black Elk, Richard Wright, Toni Morrison, Sandra Cisneros, and Maxine Hong Kingston. (C-ID ENGL 135)
